Wall Plaque with Soldier Relief in Steel Helmet, Zinc Cast on Oak Shield, 1920s–1930s
Cast zinc, oak. Shield-shaped oak plaque with mounted zinc-cast relief of a soldier's head in left profile, wearing a Model 1916 steel helmet. The relief is secured to the shield with screws. Reverse with wall mount and fixing holes. 32×27×6 cm (HxWxD).
Wall plaques featuring soldiers in steel helmets were widespread patriotic commemorative items during the interwar period. They were frequently used by veterans' associations and the "Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten" – the largest paramilitary organisation of the Weimar Republic with over 500,000 members at its peak – as association gifts or honorary plaques. The steel helmet depicted corresponds to the Model 1916, distinguished by the characteristic side lugs (ventilation fittings) and the deep-set neck guard.
