Student Mettlach Beer Stein of the Corps Marcho-Borussia Berlin, Dedication 1926
Classic student beer stein made of ivory-colored stoneware by the Villeroy & Boch manufactory, Mettlach (model number 1526). The front is decorated with a polychrome coat of arms combining heraldic and local symbols: the quartered shield displays the Prussian Eagle in the upper left, the Berlin Bear in the upper right, the diagonal fraternity colors in the lower left, and a rampant lion in the lower right. The coat of arms is framed by the mottoes "Dem Freunde treu und treu dem Vaterland! 14.6.1881." (True to the friend and true to the Fatherland!) in the upper arch and "Einer für Alle, - Alle für Einen!" (One for All, - All for One!) in the lower area. The stein features a solid pewter lid with a flat top, engraved with the large Zirkel of the Corps Marcho-Borussia Berlin. Inside the lid is the finely engraved dedication, also featuring the Corps Zirkel after the names: "Rudolf Lorenz Z! AH. (Old Boy) s/l. Lbb. (to his dear Leibbursche) Richard Wollburg Z! AH. (xx) (xx) Weihnachten 1926." The base bears the stamped Mettlach abbey mark, the model number "1526", and the hand-painted dealer mark "H. Zimmer, Berlin N.24.". Good condition commensurate with age; the glaze shows the fine crazing typical for this material. 15.2x10.5 cm (HxD)
This stein is a historical testimony to the Corps Marcho-Borussia Berlin. As noted in literature, the fraternity was originally founded on June 14, 1881, as the "Akademischer Gymnasialverein Werderania", later appearing as a Landsmannschaft, and finally reconstituting as Corps Marcho-Borussia in 1912. The motto and the founding date of 1881 on the stein were adopted from Werderania. The dedication from 1926 falls into the period following the merger with Corps Hansea (Winter Semester 1924/25), explaining the magnificent quality of the stein for an "Old Boy".
