Silver. Set of ten commemorative coins of the German Democratic Republic, each 20 Mark. Obverse with portrait or thematic depiction of the honored personality with dates and name inscription, reverse with the GDR state coat of arms (hammer and compass within a wreath of ears) and the inscription „DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK" and value „20 MARK". Includes issues for Leibniz, Humboldt, Marx, Goethe, Engels, Cranach, Bebel, Kant, Bach and Lessing. Condition very fine to extremely fine, partly toned with light handling marks. D. 33 mm each. Total weight 210 g.
The 20 Mark commemorative coins of the GDR were issued in silver between 1966 and 1990 and honored outstanding figures of German intellectual, cultural and labor history. They count among the most important numismatic documents of the GDR.
