oil on oval copperplate, signed lower right, 20th century, after the English portrait painter Thomas Gainsborough, Portrait of Elizabeth Ann Sheridan, née Linley. The painting depicts the young woman with curly hair and a green ribbon in a half-length composition against a suggested landscape with trees. Her head turned slightly to the side, her finely modeled face, and the loosely draped garment with a transparent shawl lend the painting an elegant yet sensitive effect, in keeping with the portrait tradition of the English Rococo and Early Classical periods, age-appropriate condition, retouching, craquelure, some rubbing, image 20 x 14.5 cm (HxW), wooden passe-partout, framed, passe-partout with a crack upper center, overall dimensions 40 x 33.5 cm (HxW)
