Brunswick Sword Knot for Sabre or Sword with Woven Tassel and Carrying Strap, 19th Century
Metal thread, wool, textile band. A sword knot for an edged weapon (sabre or sword) from the Duchy of Brunswick. The carrying strap is woven from metal thread in gold and blue tones and displays the characteristic striped pattern. At the lower end there is a braided, spherical tassel with fine basket weave and a blue wool core. The transition from band to tassel is worked with a woven slider. Good age-appropriate worn condition with patina from use, L. 48 cm, tassel D. 3 cm.
The sword knot (Portepee) was a textile pendant on the hilt of an edged weapon and served as a rank insignia. In the Duchy of Brunswick, officers and senior non-commissioned officers carried specific versions in the state colours of blue and gold. The fine wire-wrapped work of the tassel and band indicates a quality officer's variant. The sword knot was looped through the guard of the sabre or sword and placed around the wrist to secure the weapon whilst riding or in combat.
