Round Brunswick Coachman's Cockade with Blue Lacquer Finish and Sunburst Edge, 19th Century
Metal, lacquer. A coachman's cockade from the Duchy of Brunswick. The cockade features a round form with a serrated sunburst edge as the outer rim and a blue-lacquered, radially embossed centre. The reverse features a long curved pin for attachment to headwear. Age-appropriate condition, the blue lacquer has chipped in several places, D. 55 mm, L. 85 mm.
Cockades were round badges worn on headwear to indicate allegiance to a particular employer or state. In the Duchy of Brunswick, coachmen and servants wore cockades in the state colours of blue and yellow on their service hats. The present cockade of stamped metal with blue lacquer finish and its characteristic sunburst form is a typical example of this type of livery identification in the 19th century.
