Student Beer Stein of the Dental Fraternity Hercynia Berlin, c. 1900
Extraordinary student cylindrical stein made of colorless, mouth-blown glass with pewter mounting and finely painted porcelain lid. The central motif of the lid presents the detailed full coat of arms of the Dental Fraternity Hercynia to Berlin, founded on July 7, 1888. The quartered shield displays heraldic and subject-specific symbolism: on a green ground the Staff of Aesculapius as the classic sign of medicine and dentistry, and on a black ground a skull with crossed bones as a Memento Mori symbol and reference to anatomical studies. The fields are complemented by the founding date "7. VII. 1888" and the symbol of the handshake of loyalty in a circle. The coat of arms is surmounted in the center by an inescutcheon in the colors Black-Gold-Green, displaying the fraternity's Zirkel. Above the shield rests a jousting helmet with green-gold and black-gold mantling as well as a three-colored crest made of ostrich feathers. The mottoes frame the coat of arms: above "Hercynia sei's Panier!" and below "Amicitia, scientia, honor!" (Friendship, Science, Honor). A plastically crafted coat of arms with crest serves as the thumb lift. The glass body is kept simple. Good condition commensurate with age, glass without cracks. 18x8.5 cm (HxD)
The Dental Fraternity Hercynia Berlin was a rare professional fraternity specifically aimed at dentistry students. Unlike the large general fraternities, it explicitly cultivated professional exchange, which is reflected in the specific heraldry (Staff of Aesculapius, skull). Objects from these subject-specific corporations are significantly rarer than those of classic Corps or Burschenschaften.
