Military cuckoo clock with eagle and cannons, Black Forest, circa 1900
Carved Black Forest wall clock in the form of a military cuckoo clock. The wooden case is surmounted by an applied eagle between crossed cannon barrels, drums, flags and weapons, the carved decoration in relief, dark-stained surface, original polychrome finish stripped or burnt off. Wooden dial with nailed-on Roman hour numerals and pierced bone hands, cuckoo hatch above. Mechanical movement with half-hour strike on coiled gong, driven by two black-lacquered cylindrical weights on chains, Black Forest wooden rod pendulum. Clock runs, weights heavily worn, left wing of the eagle broken and glued. 36 x 26 x 12 cm (HxWxD).
Militarily decorated cuckoo clocks from the Black Forest appeared from the late 19th century onward as patriotic variants of the classic hunting and foliage carved cases. The motif of the eagle above weapon trophies takes up the official symbolism of the German Empire and remained a widespread display piece in bourgeois and military households until the First World War. The half-hour strike on a coiled gong and the chain drive with cast-iron weights correspond to the typical Black Forest serial production of the period.
