The Cross of Honour of the German Mother was instituted on 16 December 1938 and first awarded on 21 May 1939. The Gold class was the highest grade, presented to mothers of eight or more children. The Silver class was awarded for six to seven children, the Bronze class for four to five. Approximately three million Mother's Crosses were awarded in total. The manufacturer Alfred Stubbe, based in Berlin S.W. 19, is a documented producer of Mother's Crosses. The accompanying War Merit Cross and the Faithful Service Cross suggest a family context – the husband's decorations may have been kept together with the Mother's Cross.
