The Seitengewehr 98/05 (S98/05) was introduced from 1905 as a replacement for the S98 in the Prussian army and was produced in quantities of several million by over 40 manufacturers until 1918. It was designed for the Gewehr 98 rifle and was used en masse on the Western Front during the First World War. R. Stock & Co. of Berlin-Marienfelde was one of these manufacturers. The Seitengewehr 84/98 (S84/98) was the standard bayonet of the Wehrmacht for the Karabiner 98k during the Second World War. The Pertinax grips (a phenolic resin laminate) replaced the earlier wooden grips from approximately 1938 onwards. The combination of First and Second World War pieces in a single lot offers collectors an overview of the development of German side arms over four decades.
