Student Beer Stein of Cheruscia Berlin (1895) & Graphic of the Corps House (1984)
Two-part ensemble consisting of a beer stein and a framed graphic of the Cheruscia Berlin. 1) Student faceted stein made of colorless glass with pewter mounting and finely painted porcelain lid insert. The central motif of the lid presents the polychrome full coat of arms of the Landsmannschaft Cheruscia Berlin. The quartered shield displays heraldically significant details: In the upper left field, the fraternity's Zirkel on a white ground; in the upper right field, the "Handshake of Loyalty" (dextrarium iunctio) emerging from clouds on a sky-blue ground. The lower left field depicts the Hermannsdenkmal in Detmold on a green ground, a reference to the name patron Arminius the Cheruscan. In the lower right field are two crossed basket-hilt swords within a laurel wreath, accompanied by the founding date "12. 1. 1859". The coat of arms is surmounted in the center by an inescutcheon showing the rampant Berlin Bear. Above the shield thrones a jousting helmet with green-silver and blue-silver mantling, crowned by a tri-colored crest of ostrich feathers in the colors Green-White-Blue. The depiction is framed by the mottoes "Cheruscia sei’s Panier!" at the top and "Virtuti semper corona!" (To virtue always the crown!) at the bottom. A plastically crafted eagle serves as the thumb lift. Inside the lid is the handwritten dedication: "R. Rohn x F.W. s/l. Lbf. (to his dear Leibfuchs) Max Krause z. fr. Erg. (in friendly memory) S.-S. 1895". The glass body is faceted and features a ground calibration mark "0.4 l" on the upper rim. Good condition commensurate with age, small chips on the glass base. 2)Filigree original etching on paper, framed behind glass. The motif shows a detailed architectural depiction of the Corps house of Cheruscia Berlin in Berlin-Lichterfelde West. The villa is embedded in park-like surroundings. Below the depiction on the right is the artist's pencil signature as well as the date "84" (1984). On the bottom left, the edition is numbered "30/50". A special feature is the fraternity color ribbon (Couleur band) in the fraternity colors (Green-Silver-Light Blue) integrated diagonally into the lower left corner of the matting. Stein: 17x8 cm (HxD) Depiction: 15x21.5 cm (HxW), Total dimensions: 27x33 cm (HxW)
This set connects two eras of the fraternity's history. The Landsmannschaft Cheruscia Berlin was founded on January 12, 1859. The stein dates from the period as a Landsmannschaft (1895) and documents a classic "Leibverhältnis" gift through the dedication of the Senior (x) Rohn to his Leibfuchs Max Krause. The etching shows the later Corps house in Lichterfelde and was created in 1984, presumably on the occasion of an anniversary, in a limited edition. The ribbon integrated into the frame establishes a direct connection to the colors shown on the stein and in the coat of arms.
