Student Beer Stein of the Pharmaceutical Fraternity Cheruscia Berlin, Dedication 1884
Classic student faceted stein made of colorless glass with pewter mounting and finely painted porcelain lid insert. The lid motif displays the full coat of arms of the Pharmaceutical Fraternity Cheruscia Berlin, flanked by two draped flags. The quartered shield contains: upper left the rampant Berlin Bear (location reference), upper right the handshake of loyalty emerging from clouds, lower left the Staff of Aesculapius on a green ground (symbol of pharmacy and medicine), and lower right two crossed swords within a laurel wreath. Inside the wreath is the founding date "1. 12. 59", directly below it the date "2. 2. 75". The inescutcheon displays the fraternity's Zirkel. Above the coat of arms thrones a jousting helmet with red-blue-green mantling and a corresponding crest of ostrich feathers. The motto "Cheruscia sei’s Panier!" frames the scene at the top. A plastic eagle serves as the thumb lift. Inside the lid is the calligraphic dedication: "G. König (F.M.) F.W. x. s/l. Leibf. (to his dear Leibfuchs) M. Gottschalk z. frdl. Erg. (in friendly memory) W.S. 1883/84." The glass body is faceted. Good condition commensurate with age, the pewter mounting is darkly patinated. 17.5x8.5 cm (HxD)
This stein is an early piece of the Pharmaceutical Fraternity Cheruscia Berlin. The Staff of Aesculapius in the coat of arms explicitly refers to the professional orientation of the members. The founding date December 1, 1859, and the second date February 2, 1875 (possibly a merger or publication date) are historically significant. The donor G. König signs with the abbreviations "(F.M.)" for Fuchsmajor and an "x" at the end for Senior. This indicates that he held these high offices at the time of the gift. The dating to the Winter Semester 1883/84 makes the object an interesting piece of late Imperial era student memorabilia.
