Copper powder flasks with brass chargers and embossed shell decoration were widespread in the 19th century. Leading manufacturers such as James Dixon & Sons and G. & J.W. Hawksley of Sheffield exported such flasks in large numbers. The spring-loaded charger enabled precise dosing of the powder charge in dram units. With the introduction of cartridge ammunition, these flasks became increasingly obsolete from the second half of the 19th century.
