Student Beer Stein of the Dental Fraternity Hercynia Berlin, Dedication 1890
High-quality student ceremonial stein made of colorless glass with pewter mounting and finely painted porcelain lid insert. The glass body differs significantly from simple cylindrical steins due to its elaborate finishing: it features a stepped base and is decorated on the wall with two rows of deeply cut lenses (lens cut) as well as vertical notch cuts. The central motif of the lid presents the polychrome full coat of arms of the Dental Fraternity Hercynia Berlin. The quartered shield displays in the upper right field a skull with crossed swords on a black ground (symbol of transience and anatomy), in the lower left field the Staff of Aesculapius on a green ground (medicine/dentistry), and in the lower right field the handshake of loyalty with the founding date "7. VII. 1888" on a golden ground. The first field visualizes the fraternity colors. The coat of arms is surmounted in the center by an inescutcheon bearing the fraternity's Zirkel. Above the shield thrones a jousting helmet with black-gold and green-gold mantling, crowned by a tri-colored crest of ostrich feathers. The mottoes "Hercynia sei’s Panier!" and "Amicitia scientia honor!" frame the depiction. A plastically crafted eagle serves as the thumb lift. Inside the lid is the handwritten dedication: "G. Deby Z! s/l Cf. (to his dear Co-Fox) B. Heinrichs Z! z. fr. Erg. Berl. S.S. 1890." A numbering "93.8" is visible on the lower edge. Good condition commensurate with age, glass undamaged, pewter mounting intact with natural patina. 20.5x9.5 cm (HxD)
This stein is an early testimony to the Dental Fraternity Hercynia Berlin, founded only in 1888. The dedication from the Summer Semester 1890 ("S.S. 1890") documents a gift just two years after the foundation. The abbreviation "Cf." in the dedication traditionally stands for "Con-Fuchs" (Co-Fox), meaning that the donor and recipient joined the fraternity as "Füchse" (pledges/new members) in the same semester, often establishing a particularly close friendship. The elaborate glass design (bossed goblet style) underscores the value of the gift.
