Four Operating Manuals East German Vehicle Manufacturing, EMW 340, IFA Phänomen Granit, Wartburg 353W
Paper and cardboard. Four operating manuals and technical documents relating to East German vehicle manufacturing. Included are: 1) Operating Manual for EMW 340-2 Passenger Car, Issue 1954, VEB Automobilfabrik EMW Eisenach, 2) IFA Diesel Engine H.65 Spare Parts List, 3) Operating Manual for IFA-LKW Phänomen Granit 32, Issue 1954, 4) IFA Wartburg 353W Operating Manual, VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach DDR. The booklets show heavy signs of use.
These operating manuals document three key models of the East German vehicle industry. The EMW 340-2 was manufactured from 1949 at the former BMW plant in Eisenach – initially still under the BMW brand, then from 1952 under the name EMW (Eisenacher Motorenwerk) following a legal dispute with the Munich parent company. Production of the EMW 340 ceased in 1955. The IFA Phänomen Granit 32 was a light diesel truck produced from 1952 at VEB Phänomen-Werke Zittau; from 1956 the successor model bore the name IFA Garant, from 1961 Robur. The Wartburg 353W was produced from 1966 to 1988 at VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach, with the "W" variant (Weiterentwicklung/further development) appearing from 1975 with technical improvements. Operating manuals and spare parts lists for these vehicles are sought after by collectors of GDR automobile memorabilia, as original documents attesting to the technical standards and production history of the East German motor industry.
