Bismarck beer stein with historical motto, glass with pewter lid
Glass with pewter lid. Cylindrical glass stein with applied decoration. The front shows a portrait of Otto von Bismarck in dark uniform with peaked cap, framed by green laurel branches. Beneath the portrait the German motto: "Wir Deutschen fürchten Gott und sonst Nichts" (We Germans fear God and nothing else). Hinged pewter lid. Age-appropriate good condition. 23 x 13 x 9 cm (HxWxD).
The motto is based on Bismarck's famous speech of February 6, 1888, in the Reichstag, in which he affirmed German self-confidence and the nation's peaceful intentions. This phrase was widely reproduced on decorative pieces, postcards, and drinking vessels and became an identity-forming symbol of the Wilhelmine era. Such beer steins belonged to the patriotic everyday culture of the late 19th century.
