The firm was founded in 1876 as Schön & Borho in Freising (Bavaria) and traded as Hauber & Reuther from 1882; it was a major manufacturer of stoneware steins. Production of Model 54 is dated to the period 1 September 1876 to 6 August 1878. The "Fuchs" (fox) denotes a freshman member of a German student corporation who undergoes a probationary period before being promoted to "Bursche" (full member). Character steins of this type emerged from c. 1850 and form a distinct collecting category.
