Officer's Sword Knot (Portepee) for Edged Weapon, Brunswick, Imperial Era
Metallic thread, textile. Sword knot for sabre or sword, with acorn-shaped tassel of gold bullion wire (Bouillondraht) and braided slider. Flat woven strap with three blue longitudinal stripes, tassel with black velvet finish. Good, age-appropriate worn condition, metallic thread patinated. Overall length 48 cm, tassel D. 3 cm.
The acorn-shaped tassel of bullion wire and the quality of execution identify this as an officer's sword knot. The attribution to Brunswick is based on the characteristic blue longitudinal stripes of the Duchy. After the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, Brunswick troops were incorporated into the Prussian Army as the 92nd Infantry Regiment and the 17th Hussar Regiment, though they retained their own traditional insignia.
