Set of 9 GDR silver commemorative coins, incl. Brandenburg Gate 1989, Liebknecht/Luxemburg, Beethoven

Silver. Set of nine commemorative coins of the German Democratic Republic in mixed denominations (5, 10 and 20 Mark). Obverse with portrait or thematic depiction, reverse with the GDR state coat of arms and value. Includes issues for Karl Liebknecht / Rosa Luxemburg, Opening of the Brandenburg Gate on 22 December 1989, Ernst Abbe, Käthe Kollwitz, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Beethoven, „15 Years GDR", Albrecht Dürer and Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen. Condition very fine to extremely fine, partly toned. Total weight 158 g.

Of particular note is the coin commemorating the opening of the Brandenburg Gate on 22 December 1989 — issued in 1990 as a 20 Mark piece, it is considered the most symbolic GDR commemorative coin in relation to German reunification.
