Student Beer Stein of the Landsmannschaft Cheruscia Berlin, Dedication 1877
Solid student ceremonial stein made of colorless pressed glass with pewter mounting and finely painted porcelain lid insert. The glass body is designed in the style of a bossed goblet and features three rows of semi-circular lenses arranged one below the other on the wall. The lid motif presents the fraternity's Zirkel on an oval, tri-colored shield (Blue-Red-Green), embedded in a magnificent, ermine-lined mantle held by golden cords. The composition is crowned by a barred helmet with a crest of three ostrich feathers in the corresponding colors Blue, Red, and Green. Above the depiction stands the motto "Virtuti semper corona!" (To virtue always the crown!). A plastically crafted eagle serves as the thumb lift. Inside the lid is the handwritten dedication: "Leopold Kersten (Bachus) s/l. Leibfuchs (to his dear Leibfuchs) C. Seulen (Cid) z. fr. Erinnerung (in friendly memory) Berlin, W.S. 1876/77." Good condition commensurate with age, the pewter mounting shows a light patina. 18x9.5 cm (HxD)
This stein is a particularly early piece of the Landsmannschaft Cheruscia Berlin (founded 1859). The use of "pub names" like "Bachus" and "Cid" in the dedication testifies to the student tradition of adopting alias names within the fraternity. The depiction of the coat of arms before an ermine mantle (mantling) is a typical stylistic element of high-ranking student memorabilia of the late 19th century and gives the object a prestigious appearance. The coloring (Blue-Red-Green) differs from the later colors of Cheruscia (Green-Silver-Light Blue), which could indicate a historical color change or variation.
