Austria Franz Joseph I. Silver Signum Laudis with Swords in Dedication Case Mayer's Söhne
Original Austro-Hungarian award from the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The medal is silver plated and is attached to a movable, elaborate imperial crown. The obverse shows the right-facing portrait of the Emperor with the circumscription "FRANCISCVS IOS. I. D. G. IMP. AVST. REX BOH. ETC. ET REX APOST. HVNG.". The reverse bears the inscription "SIGNVM LAVDIS" within a wreath. The medal is on the original war ribbon with applied crossed gold-colored swords. Included is the dark red original case with the gold-embossed dedication on the lid: "Vom Offizierskorps des k. u. k. Otocaner Infanterieregiments Graf Jellacic No 79" (From the Officer Corps of the Imperial and Royal Otočac Infantry Regiment Count Jellačić No. 79). The white silk lining inside the lid identifies the manufacturer "V. MAYER’S SÖHNE" as "K.K. Hof- u. Kammer-Juweliere" (Imperial-Royal Court and Chamber Jewelers) and "Ordenfabrikanten" (Order Manufacturers) in Vienna. Good condition commensurate with age, medal darkly patinated, case slightly rubbed at the edges. Medal: 85x52 mm (HxW), Case: 20x60x110 mm (HxWxD).
This Silver Military Merit Medal is a historically particularly valuable piece due to the accompanying case. The inscription proves that it is an honorary gift from the Officer Corps of the k.u.k. Infantry Regiment No. 79 "Graf Jellacic" (stationed in Otocac, Croatia). The crossed swords on the ribbon symbolize an award ceremony for "bravery before the enemy" (frontline combatant). The manufacturer V. Mayer’s Söhne (Vincenz Mayer) was one of the most exclusive order jewelers of the monarchy and supplied the highest quality.
