Student Beer Stein of the Landsmannschaft Werderania Berlin, Christmas 1906
Cylindrical beer stein made of gray, salt-glazed stoneware with a solid pewter mounting. The front is decorated with fine polychrome hand-painting. It displays the full coat of arms of the Landsmannschaft Werderania Berlin, flanked by the Latin motto "Vivat, crescat, floreat FW! Landsm. Werderania." (May it live, grow, and flourish). The quartered shield presents in the upper left field the founding date "14. 6. 1881" on a green ground, in the upper right field the black Berlin Bear on a white ground (location reference). The lower left field shows an oak leaf wreath containing the handshake of loyalty (clasped hands), the lower right field the fraternity's Zirkel on the fraternity colors. Above the shield thrones a barred helmet with green-gold-violet crest of ostrich feathers and corresponding mantling. Below the coat of arms runs the calligraphic dedication: "Alfred Kath s/l. Lbb. (to his dear Leibbursche) Dr. Hans Gahl Weihnachten 06." The stein features a solid pewter lid with a plastic eagle thumb lift. On the base, there is the impressed mark of the stoneware manufactory Merkelbach & Wick, Grenzhausen, as well as the impressed mark "XX". In good condition commensurate with its age. 17.0x9.5 cm (HxD)
The Landsmannschaft Werderania was founded on June 14, 1881, in Berlin. The fraternity colors were Green-White-Violet (partially rendered heraldically as Gold/Yellow here). The stein is a typical example of Westerwald fine stoneware, which was frequently produced for student purposes around 1900. The dedication for Christmas 1906 from an active student (Alfred Kath) to his Leibbursche (Dr. Hans Gahl), who already held an academic doctorate, proves the lifelong bond in the "Lebensbund" principle.
