Two Depictions of Academic Fencing

copper etching on paper, each inscribed in the plate below, lot consisting of two prints after the paintings by Georg Mühlberg, "Säbelmensur" (Sabre Mensur) and "Auf die Mensur, los!" (To the Mensur, go!). The motifs depict combat scenes of two fencers in typical protective gear. The combatants are surrounded by attentive seconds and fraternity members wearing their traditional colors (Couleur), good condition, image each 19 x 29.5 cm (HxW), each with a passe-partout, framed behind glass, frames slightly rubbed, overall dimensions each 48.5 x 57.5 cm (HxW)

Georg Mühlberg (1863-1925) was a well-known German painter, draftsman, and illustrator, particularly famous for his highly detailed depictions of fraternity student life. These Mensur scenes are collector's items in the field of Studentica.
