The Berlin firm Sy & Wagner emerged in 1859 from the silverware manufactory of the Prussian court goldsmith Georg Hossauer and was active in the German Empire as a court goldsmith, producing among other things silverware, Iron Crosses and royal orders. The Garde-Jäger-Bataillon was an elite unit of the Prussian Army garrisoned in Potsdam. Figural reservist's and officer's gifts with a standing soldier figure on a column base and engraved dedication cartouche were a firm element of military farewell and commemorative culture between the foundation of the German Empire and the First World War.
