A rare and imposing pallasch of the French heavy cavalry (cuirassiers), Model AN XIII (Modèle de l’An XIII), from the period of the First Napoleonic Empire. The massive brass guard with three branches bears several inspection and acceptance stamps, some still legible. The grip retains its original leather and wire wrapping, showing considerable wear from use. The long, straight blade with double fullers on both sides is characteristic of this powerful cavalry weapon. The sword comes without its scabbard. In unrestored, age-appropriate condition with a strong, authentic patina. Overall length approx. 114 cm, blade length approx. 97.5 cm.
The Model AN XIII (Year 13 of the Revolutionary Calendar, 1804/05) was the formidable standard weapon of Napoleon’s cuirassiers — the elite of the French heavy cavalry. These troops played a decisive role in many of the great battles of the Napoleonic Wars, from Austerlitz to Waterloo, where their devastating cavalry charges became legendary. This sword stands as an iconic symbol of Napoleon’s Grande Armée and a significant artifact of European military history.
