Large Wooden Knight's Castle, Diorama with Tin Figures, Historicism c. 1900
Wood, hand-painted, tin figures. A large and exceptionally detailed diorama of a medieval knight's castle. The structure is built from several modular wooden elements and is entirely hand-painted. On a rocky landscape base rise the defensive walls with battlements and towers, enclosing a castle courtyard. In the center stands the tall keep alongside other residential and utility buildings. The diorama is brought to life by numerous contemporary tin figures, including knights on horseback and foot soldiers, depicting a scene of a siege or courtly life, very good age-appropriate condition with a beautiful, original patina, 54 x 58 x 37 cm (HxWxD).
Castle toys like this were an extremely popular and high-quality plaything in bourgeois families in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They reflect the romanticized and idealized vision of the Middle Ages and chivalry that was prevalent in the German Empire. As elaborate handmade items, they are now rare and sought-after collector's pieces that represent a fascinating piece of toy and cultural history.
