Antique Hussar Doll with Pickelhaube and Two Czapkas, World War I Soldier
Wood, hand-painted, fabric, leather, metal. A large and finely detailed character doll representing a German hussar from the time of the First World War. The head, hands, and boots are artfully carved from wood and hand-painted, while the body consists of a firmly stuffed fabric torso. The soldier wears a back uniform jacket (Dolman) with the elaborate braiding characteristic of the hussars, complete with shoulder flaps and cartridge pouch / bandolier. Particularly noteworthy is the set of three interchangeable headpieces, allowing the doll to be displayed as a member of different branches of service: 1) a Prussian infantry Pickelhaube; 2) two Czapkas of the Uhlans, one with a fabric cover (cavalry). Good age-appropriate original condition with attractive patina, minor moth damage to the uniform. Height 50 cm.
Inspection recommended. 360-degree photo available on our website. Soldier dolls of this kind were popular and high-quality toys in patriotic bourgeois and aristocratic households of the German Empire, especially during World War I. Beyond their function as toys, they fostered early identification with the military. The elaborate craftsmanship—with hand-carved wooden parts and a tailor-made uniform—makes this piece a rare and culturally significant historical artifact.
