Reservist’s Beer Stein of the Artillery – Field Artillery Regiment No. 62, Oldenburg
Porcelain, colorfully painted and inscribed, relief pewter lid. A magnificent reservist’s stein belonging to a corporal of the artillery from the German Imperial period. The body is richly decorated with colorful military scenes, including cannon maneuvers and farewell moments. At the center appears a large coat of arms beneath the Imperial crown, flanked by flags of the German states and a detailed list of the reservists of the unit. The stein is personally dedicated to Gefr. Gorath of Field Artillery Regiment No. 62. Numerous patriotic toasts such as “Kanonendonner ist unser Gruß!” (“The thunder of cannon is our salute!”) complete the decoration. The elaborately relief-cast pewter lid is topped by a fully sculpted artillery group depicting a cannon with its crew; the thumb lift is shaped as an eagle. Inside the base is a fine lithophane which, when held to the light, reveals a scene of a soldier with his sweetheart. Very good age-appropriate condition. Height 27 cm, diameter 11 cm.
Reservist steins were highly popular keepsakes in the German Empire (ca. 1890–1914), purchased by soldiers at the end of their service. They recorded in great detail the regiment, location, and comrades of the reservist. The elaborate design—with relief pewter lid, patriotic inscriptions, and lithophane portrait—made them treasured personal mementos of military service and symbols of pride and camaraderie.
