German Wehrmacht Heer (DAK) Pith Helmet, Afrika Korps circa 1940
Cork, light beige fabric cover, artificial leather. An original army (Heer) pith helmet from the Second World War period. Hemispherical dome shape made of cork with a wide brim and light beige fabric cover. Three ventilation holes on each side, the former insignia have been removed. Inside with remnants of a difficult-to-read round ink stamp, likely "2-39", and the original sweatband made of artificial leather. The cork spacer discs are applied, good condition appropriate for age, the chinstrap is missing, 26 x 36 cm (WxL).
The pith helmet was issued starting in 1940 to members of the Wehrmacht, particularly the German Afrika Korps (DAK), who were deployed in warm climate zones. It was intended to protect against intense sunlight and heat. There were various production variants made of felt or cork. This piece is a classic and authentic example of the uniforms used by the Afrika Korps.
