Impressive Boar Spear with Original 18th-Century Tip
Iron, forged; wood; antler; leather. A representative boar spear featuring an original hand-forged spearhead (H. 29 cm) from the 18th century. The broad, leaf-shaped iron blade is mounted on a later, sturdy wooden shaft. Characteristic is the antler crossguard mounted below the socket, designed to keep charging game at a safe distance. The shaft is additionally wrapped with decorative leather. In original find condition; the spearhead shows strong, authentic age patina, while the shaft and fittings are later additions. L. 210 cm.
The boar spear was, from the Middle Ages until the 19th century, the principal weapon used in the hunt for dangerous game such as wild boar and bear. Beyond its practical function, it also served as a symbol of noble status.
