This ring is a historical document from the "Fortress of Lorient." During World War II, Lorient was one of the most important German U-boat bases in France. After the Allied landings in Normandy in 1944, the city was declared a fortress and was held by German troops until the end of the war in May 1945. Such rings were often made locally by or for the besieged soldiers as a memento of the months-long siege.
