Bavarian Aircraft Observer Badge with Archive of a Lieutenant of Fliegerabteilung A289, ca. 1914
Silver, hollow-stamped and back-plated, obverse with an oval wreath of laurel and oak leaves, surmounted by the Bavarian royal crown, centre with a square enameled shield featuring a red border and diagonal black-and-white division, reverse with vertical pin and hook clasp, maker’s engraving “Karl Pöllath Schrobenhausen” and silver hallmark “Silber”, housed in the original presentation case with maker’s imprint, condition: very good, height 73 mm, width 45 mm, weight 26.8 g. Accompanied by the complete and extremely rare personal archive of the original recipient, a reserve lieutenant of the Bavarian Fliegerabteilung A289. Included are: a portrait photograph of the officer wearing the badge, two military IDs (including the original pilot’s licence), a pay book (Soldbuch), and extensive field post and personal correspondence. Of particular note are detailed handwritten flight diaries with entries describing photo reconnaissance missions, aerial combat, and deployment orders, further supplemented by operational maps, classified documents, annotated reconnaissance charts, and original wartime photographs.
