Student beer stein of the Schwarzburg fraternity Sedinia Greifswald with dedication, circa 1900
Beer stein made of faceted glass with pewter mount and elaborately decorated lid insert of polychrome painted porcelain. In the center, the full coat of arms of the Schwarzburg fraternity Sedinia Greifswald with barred helmet, helmet mantling in red, gold and green, and a three-colour crest of ostrich feathers, flanked by two banners. The quartered shield shows: top left the Prussian eagle, top right bundle of arrows on green ground, bottom left a griffin bird rising toward the sun, bottom right a red griffin, overlaid with a central escutcheon in green, gold and red. Below the shield, two crossed duelling sabres with the fraternity’s motto “Ich – Wag’s Gott – Walt’s”; to the side, the founding date “24. VII. 1884”; above, the fraternity’s maxim “Sedinia sei’s Panier!”. Sculpted eagle thumb rest. On the inside of the porcelain lid insert, handwritten dedication: “T. Gottheis st. th. / s. l. Lbfx / W. Braune st. th. / z. fr. Erg. / Gryps. W. S. 99/00” Signed “Otto Häberlein”. Good, age-appropriate condition with minor signs of use, pewter mount slightly loose at the handle.
