Beer Stein with Pewter Lid, Wingolf Greifswald, 1910
Stoneware stein with smooth wall, the front featuring the polychrome coat of arms of the student fraternity Wingolf Greifswald. The quartered shield displays, among other elements, a black Imperial eagle on gold, a red griffin, a golden cross pattée on white, and a color shield in black-white-gold with the founding date “17 VII 1867”. Above it, a crowned helmet with a black-white-gold feather plume and the motto: “Wingolf sei’s Panier!” (“Let Wingolf be the banner!”), below the fraternity’s monogram (Zirkel). On the reverse, handwritten dedication: “Paul Post (Wingolf Marburg) (Wingolf Greifswald) (x) s/l Fritz Isler (Wingolf Greifswald) Gryps. 1910.”. Below the handle, signed “Otto Marcks Greifsw.”. Pewter lid with engraved fraternity monogram in relief and lion-shaped thumb lift. Base marked “Villeroy & Boch”. Age-appropriate good condition with minor signs of use. H. 17 cm, D. 10 cm
