clear lead crystal glass with faceted wall, heavy pewter lid with sculpted eagle thumb rest, lid inset with a colorfully enameled porcelain plaque showing the full coat of arms of the Association of German Students (VdSt) in Greifswald, quartered shield featuring the Iron Cross in an oak wreath, German Imperial Eagle, red-white color field, red griffin, and a golden cross on a light blue ground, crest with black and red plume, surrounding motto: “Vorwärts mit Gott für Kaiser und Reich!” (“Forward with God for Kaiser and Empire!”), dated “18 VI 27 81”, handwritten dedication inside the lid: “Emil Pingel VdSt (xx) cand. med. s./l. The Verband der deutschen Studenten (VdSt, Association of German Students) was founded in 1881 as a national and academically oriented student organization. The chapter in Greifswald is one of the early founding branches and is still active today. The colors black, white, and red represent the imperial colors of the German Empire. This finely crafted stein with eagle-shaped thumb rest, vivid enamel painting, and personal dedication is a rare and authentic piece of student commemorative culture from around 1900.
