H. Burmeister, Student Still Life with Fraternity Items of the Landsmannschaft Silesia Greifswald, 1909
Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left “H. Burmeister 1909”, inscription on the reverse. Academic genre painting symbolically depicting student life at the beginning of the 20th century. Executed with great attention to detail, the still life shows numerous typical Couleur items: At the center lies a dueling sabre (Schläger) with a student’s cap placed on top, entwined with a ribbon in the colors of the Landsmannschaft Silesia Greifswald (pink, white, and light blue). To the right, a Stürmer (traditional sash) with embroidered monogram and Zirkel is visible, clearly attributable to the Landsmannschaft within the Vertreter-Convent (VC). Additional elements include a beer stein, a green wine bottle, a pipe bowl, a match holder, root vegetables, an open newspaper titled “VC Zeitung”, and a still-smoldering cigar in an ashtray. The composition captures student celebration culture, academic identity, and everyday life in a well-balanced scene. Age-appropriate condition with craquelure, minor paint loss at the edges, and a small hole in the upper right section of the canvas. Image size: 52 × 75.5 cm (H × W), unframed.
