Student Pipe of the “Gesangskränzchen”, 1913/14
Porcelain pipe with hand-painted depiction of a full student coat of arms with crest, in the colours black–white–red and bearing the monogram “Gk”, representing a student singing society. The bowl features a finely painted coat of arms composed of a quartered shield with musical and patriotic symbols (including a lyre within a laurel wreath, a black hen, the colours black-white-red, and the founding date 18 Oct. 1886), flanked by flags and topped with a helmeted crest featuring a black-white-red feather plume. The inscription reads: “Gesangskränzchen sei’s Panier!” (“Let the singing circle be our banner!”), beneath which appears the motto: “Frei ist das Herz und frei das Lied und frei ist der Bursch, der die Welt durchzieht.” (“Free is the heart and free the song, and free is the lad who roams the world.”) Shaft made of birch wood with mounted antler piece. The reverse bears a personal dedication: “Bruno v. Freyberg s./l. Erich Thomas W. S. 1913/14”. Below the bowl is the fraternity monogram “Gk 3!”. Good condition with typical signs of age and use.
