Polychrome Enameled Römer Glass Goblet of the Scientific Association Vandalia Greifswald, ca. 1900
Colorless faceted glass goblet with exceptionally fine, polychrome enameled heraldic painting of two important student fraternities of the University of Greifswald. On the left, the quartered coat of arms of the Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlicher Verein Vandalia (Scientific Association Vandalia), featuring a red griffin, scientific instruments symbolizing the principles of “Science, Friendship, Fatherland”, and the chalk cliffs of the island of Rügen with sailing ships – representing the Pomeranian origin and regional ties of the fraternity – along with the foundation date “4. 11. 1858” in a laurel wreath. Centered above, a shield in the colors violet-white-pink, with helmet and plume in matching colors. On the right, the pomeranian national colors, with shield in blue-white-blue and corresponding helmet decoration. Very well preserved, with vibrant and clear colors, a rare and museum-quality commemorative glass from Greifswald’s student fraternity tradition, H. 16 cm, D. 4.5 cm.
The Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlicher Verein Vandalia was founded in 1858 at the University of Greifswald and was a member of the Arnstädter Verband (AV), an umbrella organization of scientific student associations at German universities. The association promoted exchange and advancement in the natural sciences and existed until at least 1968. This goblet is a rare and outstanding piece of student commemorative culture and exemplifies the festive academic traditions of the German Empire. 360-degree photo on our website.
